We had a holiday in Normandy last week and stayed in a vegetarian hotel called ‘Le Maison Vert’ at Ticheville. The house was in the middle of the countryside and its gardens were very beautiful.
The hotel was furnished in an eclectic style. Breakfasts were continental. The evening meals were superb. Disadvantages: no radio or TV, no tea and coffee-making facilities. So, if you wanted a cup of tea or coffee – other than at breakfast time – you had to pay for it. I really missed my frequent cups of tea. Breakfasts were also not included in the price. So there were a lots of ‘extras!’
The location was excellent for visiting very pretty towns, gardens and castles. We particularly enjoyed the castle at Falaise where William the Conqueror was born, the town of Argentan, Bayeux and the tapestry, the gardens and buildings of the Prieurie St-Michel near Vimoutiers, the D Day Mulberry Harbour and a small military cemetery with soldiers mainly of the South Staffs and North Staffs regiments. This was a very moving experience.
So back to the grind stone. The garden looks quite wild after a week away. Plenty of lush growth but no strawberries or raspberries ripe yet. Fortunately, we still have frozen organic raspberries from the garden from last year for our visitors.
We are looking forward to the Newport Show on Saturday July 13th. There are a few farmers and show animals, but it not really an agricultural show. There are lots to see and do in a lovely park setting at Chetwynd – a 15 minute walk from The Ferns.. This year one of the attractions is the Imps Display team – see below
I obtained my level 2 Food Hygiene certificate this month. It was quite tough to do, but being the owner and the cook, our Environmental Health Dept advised that I should do not just level one but level two, which covered a much wider range of activity. The certificate will be on the web site gallery when I get the time but at the moment there’s too many other things to do – especially all the washing and ironing to be done after the holiday, and preparing the guest bedroom for new visitors.
Best wishes to you all.
